Garage door springs don't usually fail without warning. If you know what to look and listen for, you can catch a spring that's approaching the end of its life and replace it before it snaps — which is a far better scenario than your door suddenly becoming inoperable on a cold Lancaster County morning.
Here are the most common warning signs that your torsion or extension spring is about to go.
1. The Door Opens Slower Than Usual or Struggles Partway Up
Your garage door opener is designed to work with a balanced door. The springs counterbalance the door's weight — when they're working properly, your opener should barely have to work. When a spring is losing tension, the opener has to carry more of the load. You'll notice the door moving more slowly, hesitating, or struggling partway up before completing the cycle.
This is often an early sign. Don't ignore it. A spring under strain is one that's close to failure.
2. The Door Looks Crooked or Uneven
If one spring in a two-spring torsion system is losing tension faster than the other, the door will rise unevenly — one side going up faster than the other. You'll see the top panel start to gap more on one side. This imbalanced operation puts stress on the opener, cables, and tracks as well.
3. Visible Gaps or Separation in the Spring Coils
Take a look at your torsion spring (the horizontal spring mounted above the door). If you see a gap in the coils — a section where the tightly wound metal has separated — that spring has already broken. You may not have heard it snap if you were away from home, but once there's a gap, the spring is no longer functional.
4. Loud Squeaking or Grinding When Operating
Some operational noise is normal. Grinding, squeaking, or a rhythmic clicking as the spring winds and unwinds is not. This can indicate coil-to-coil binding, rust forming on the spring surface, or worn bearings at the spring anchor points. Springs in this condition are more prone to sudden failure.
Note: A one-time annual application of garage door lubricant (not WD-40) on the spring coils can reduce friction and extend spring life. We recommend a dedicated garage door lubricant like 3-In-One Garage Door Lubricant or similar.
5. The Door Falls Faster Than Normal When Closing
When you release the door manually or when the opener is closing it, a well-balanced door descends slowly and steadily. If it's dropping or falling faster than it should, the spring tension is insufficient to slow the descent properly. This is also a safety issue — an under-tensioned door closing too fast can damage objects or injure people.
6. The Door Is Heavy When Lifted Manually
Disconnect your opener's trolley (pull the red emergency release cord) and try to lift the door manually by hand. A properly balanced door should lift smoothly with one hand and stay open when you let go at about hip height. If the door is very heavy to lift, or if it drops when you let go at waist height, the spring is not providing adequate counterbalance.

Lancaster County winters take a toll on garage door springs. Metal contracts in cold temperatures, which increases tension and changes the spring's metallurgical properties over time. If your spring is already at the end of its 10,000-cycle life, it's far more likely to snap on a January morning at 15°F than on a mild October afternoon.
